239. THE BLUE MOODS OF SPAIN by Spain
This 1995 record is by a band called Spain that hails from, well, not Spain but Los Angeles, California. Band leader Josh Haden's name may ring a bell, as he is the son of jazz great Charlie Haden and the brother of the three sisters who make up the band The Haden Triplets (to be covered in a future post).
What first attracted me to this album back in the mid-90's was the atmospheric, moody nature of not only the music but the vocals as well. This is the perfect record to put on, pour yourself a small peg of whisky, turn the lights way down low and just...listen. Several of the songs have a drone-like raga feel to them. With that in mind, my suggestion is to start with 'It's So True,' and then follow through with 'Untitled #1,' 'Ten Nights,' 'Spiritual' and end with the 14 minute (!) epic 'World of Blue' - if you dare.
Remember, I've added all these tracks to my Apple Music and Spotify playlists, so pick your poison and check them out.
