47. ON THE LINE by Jenny Lewis
You may know Jenny Lewis from her time fronting the band Rilo Kiley, but she’s actually had quite the prolific solo career, with this 2019 record being her fourth. Lewis has one of those voices that sounds great, but is hard to pick out in a crowd. It’s kind of funny that fellow musician Beck had a hand in producing several of the songs on this album, as I feel exactly the same way about his voice too. Unsurprisingly, then, the songs that I find a connection with on On the Line include the Beck-produced ones: ‘Do Si Do,’ ‘Little White Dove’ and ‘Rabbit Hole.’ That’s not to say that I don’t enjoy the rest of the album - I do. In fact, listen to the first song and tell me that the way her angelic voice delivers the line, “Heads gonna roll, baby” doesn’t put a smile on your face.
