246. LET THERE BE MUSIC by Bonny Doon
I recently came across this Detroit, Michigan band when it was mentioned in one of the 'Buried Treasures' episodes of the great Sound Opinions podcast. Turns out I had actually heard them before and didn't realize it - they served as the backing band on Waxahatchee's most excellent record from 2020, Saint Cloud (previously covered here). Anyway, I mention all of this to simply point out that, if you've listened to Saint Cloud, you'll know that the band is into some very mellow tunes. The same can be said of this 2023 record by Bonny Doon.
Let There Be Music is a great Sunday morning record (sorry, I would've loved to have this post come out on Sunday morning, but...life). The songs on this album are like sweet packets of sugar being sprinkled over the most banal of topics, but serving their purpose, that is to make said topics a bit more delectable. I'd start out with 'Crooked Creek' and then follow on with 'Roxanne,' 'Maybe Today,' title track 'Let There Be Music' and finally end with 'San Francisco' (incidentally, not the only song about the city by the Bay I've recommended).
