49. HINDU LOVE GODS (self-titled)
Fans of the band R.E.M. surely already know about this 1990 record. If on the off chance that you don’t, then you’re in for a treat. Hindu Love Gods = R.E.M. - Michael Stipe + Warren Zevon. So, that leaves you with Mike Mills, Bill Berry, Peter Buck and Warren Zevon. An album of blues/blues rock covers, this sounds nothing like R.E.M. - crunchy guitars, hollow drums and Zevon’s deep voice put a unique spin on these songs. The only “hit” was the cover of Prince’s ‘Raspberry Beret’ though all the tracks are worth a spin, including the two Robert Johnson covers that open the record.
