208. HEARTBEAT CITY by The Cars

Having been on a bit of a new wave binge lately, I thought I'd feature The Cars again. About six years after releasing a near perfect debut record, Heartbeat City landed in 1984 and was pretty much the same thing - almost perfect. I was in 8th grade when the album came out and remember just how fast it soared in popularity. This was due to the massive airplay so many of the tracks were getting on the radio. To have one record with so many hits is already hard to do, but to do it again is like lightning striking twice.

For those of you of the MTV generation, you may remember the quirky videos that went along with songs like 'You Might Think' or 'Magic' (actually, any video with Ric Ocasek is, by definition, quirky but I digress). Or, you may remember slow dancing to 'Drive' with that special someone at your 8th grade dance. Or, the synth-driven motorik of title track 'Heartbeat City.' I could go on and on rattling off pretty much every song from the record, but you would do better to just go and listen to the whole thing already!
