120. GISH by Smashing Pumpkins

This 1991 debut record by alt rock deities Smashing Pumpkins was critically reassessed only after the band released their 1993 sophomore smash Siamese Dream. And, oh what a revelation. The opening two tracks (‘I Am One’ and ‘Siva’) announce the foursome with a bang and a clatter (due in large part to drummer Jimmy Chamberlin’s ringing, hollow snare) before taking things down a notch or two into psychedelia with ‘Rhinoceros’ and ‘Crush.’ Interspersed between and after are more guitar heavy rock anthems that showcase singer/guitarist Billy Corgan’s chops. Pull up any videos of Corgan playing live (this one for example) and you’ll see that he doesn’t strum his guitar - he attacks it.
