276. BEACH DAY by Another Sky
Hat tip to my friend Keith (aka The Song Sommelier) for turning me onto this 2024 record a week or so ago. Between this album and the latest from Hinds I haven't been listening to much else these days.* Beach Day has captivated me like no other record has in recent memory. For me, it's the type of record that has required multiple listenings just to be able to wrap my head around it. I would listen and think to myself, 'Do I like this album, do I like this song?' And then I would listen again and have the same questions, but about different songs. Then, another listen finally yielded a 'whoa' - what is this. That's when it hit me that this is a different type of band with a different type of record. A bit of prog rock but not quite. A bit of indie rock but, again, not quite.
If it seems like I'm not making any sense at all, you're right. The only way to make sense of it all is to give this album a spin. And, get ready to fall under the spell of lead singer Catrin Vincent's otherworldly voice. Start out with 'The Pain' to get a taste of those vocals right off the bat. Then 'I Never Had Control' followed by 'I Caught On Fire' and end with a couple of rockers, 'A Feeling' and 'Psychopath.'
